The “Grove of Aristotle” is the only theme park in Halkidiki, situated at an altitude of 500 meters overlooking the bay of Ierissos. It is located in Stageira, the birthplace of the Greek philosopher Aristotle.

The grove is home to the impressive statue of Aristotle, created by the sculptor Nikolas to honor the renowned philosopher who was born in Ancient Stageira.

The park provides activities designed to introduce you to different natural phenomena and the ways in which they were first observed and documented by Aristotle, the world's first true scientist.

Experience playing a colossal five-ton granite musical instrument and creating mesmerizing water patterns in a pipe, along with captivating optical illusions using spinning discs.

Ancient Stagira

One of the most significant archaeological sites in Halkidiki is ancient Stageira, the hometown of Aristotle, the greatest philosopher of antiquity and teacher of Alexander the Great. It is situated approximately 500 meters southeast of the present village of Olympiada.

The ancient Stageira was established by Andrian settlers around 655 BC in the eastern mountainous region of Halkidiki. Subsequently, settlers from Chalkida also arrived in the area. Ancient sources provide a precise description of the city's location, situating Stageira north of Akanthos in a coastal area. The sources also mention the presence of a small island named “Kapros” opposite the city (with the same name attributed to the city's port, while many coins of the city bore the boar as a symbol).

According to tradition, the Stagerites transported and interred the bones of Aristotle in their city. In his honor, they established a grand celebration known as the “Aristoteleia”.

Ancient Acanthus

Established around 650 BC, Stageira was a colony of Andros. It stood out as one of the largest and wealthiest colonies in Chalkidiki, boasting the most robust port in the region. Stageira even minted its own currency, considered one of the most aesthetically pleasing of its era. The residents of Stageira initially aligned themselves with the Persian army. Subsequently, they formed alliances first with the Athenians and later with the Spartans.

In 199 BC, the Romans ransacked the city, dividing it into smaller properties that they then awarded to the legionnaires. Consequently, the Romans became the sole inhabitants of the area for a period of time. The city was named Ericius (Erissos), which eventually evolved into the present-day “Ierissos”. The ancient city of Akanthos was constructed on hills and spanned an area of 140 hectares. The ruins you will encounter on your visit consist of remnants of its walls and houses. Excavations have unveiled a public building at the heart of the settlement, featuring two marble wells.

Excavations in the region commenced 25 years ago in its cemetery zone, which is now mostly overlapped by the present village of Ierissos. Over 9,000 classical and Hellenistic tombs have been unearthed, with the majority of the discoveries showcased at the Archaeological Museum of Polygyros.
